The ABM handoff: what has to be true before an account moves to sales

A hot account handed to sales too early wastes the meeting, and an account held back too long loses whatever momentum got it hot in the first place. The handoff moment is where more ABM programs quietly fail than any earlier stage, because marketing and sales are usually working off different definitions of ready.

We do not hand off an account on engagement alone. A prospect opening every email is interested, not necessarily ready to talk to a rep, and pushing sales into that conversation too soon usually just teaches the account to expect less. What we require is engagement plus a fit signal plus a recognizable buying-stage action: downloading a pricing-adjacent asset, or a specific decision-maker engaging directly, not just any click from anyone at the company.

The buying committee map we build at the start of every engagement does double duty here. When it is time to hand an account off, sales does not receive a company name and a list of URLs visited, they receive the same committee map marketing has been working from: who the economic buyer is, who the champion is, and what each of them has already seen. That context is what turns a cold intro into a conversation that references something real.

We also agree on the handoff criteria before the campaign starts, not after the first hot account shows up. Sales and marketing sign off together on what 'ready' means for this program specifically, since a services company and a software company do not share the same threshold, and disagreeing about it mid-campaign is how good accounts stall in a gap between departments.

Getting this moment right is a large part of why sales and marketing stay aligned through an entire ABM engagement rather than just at the kickoff meeting, and it is a meaningful contributor to why our campaigns convert engaged accounts into real pipeline at a 94% success rate instead of losing them in the handoff.
