Lead nurture scoring: when a lead has earned a sales call, not just another email

A lead earns a sales call when their behaviour says they are evaluating, not when they have simply opened enough emails to cross an arbitrary point threshold. Most nurture scoring models conflate engagement with intent, which is why sales teams keep getting handed leads that are not actually ready and stop trusting the score.

We weight scoring models around behaviours that correlate with an active buying process -- pricing page visits, competitor comparison content, multiple people from the same account engaging in a short window -- far more heavily than opens and generic clicks. A single high-intent action can outscore weeks of passive newsletter engagement, because it is a better predictor of readiness.

Multi-threading matters more than most scoring models account for. One engaged contact at an account is a lead. Three different contacts from the same account engaging with bottom-funnel content inside two weeks is a buying committee starting to form, and we score that account-level pattern separately from any individual contact's score.

The handoff point is where most programmes break down. We set an explicit threshold agreed with the client's sales team in advance -- not a number marketing picked alone -- and we route leads at that threshold immediately rather than batching them, because a sales-ready lead that sits for three days has usually cooled by the time it is called.

Getting that threshold right, and having sales actually trust it, is a big part of why leads we hand off convert into real pipeline at a rate that supports our 94% success rate across active programmes.
