Measuring social media marketing by pipeline, not impressions

Impressions and follower counts are easy numbers to put in a monthly report and almost entirely disconnected from whether social media marketing is actually contributing to revenue. A social program can hit every reach and engagement benchmark on a dashboard and still be doing nothing measurable for pipeline, and a lot of B2B social programs operate exactly this way for years without anyone questioning the metrics being used.

We tag social-driven traffic and conversions the same way we track any other channel in a broader lead generation system, following a click from a social post through to whatever it leads to, a gated content download, a webinar registration, a direct inquiry, rather than treating social as a self-contained channel measured only on its own engagement numbers. That tracking is what turns a like count into an actual answer to whether social is doing real work.

This also changes what content gets prioritized. A post that generates a lot of likes but no clicks through to anything further is a weaker asset than one with fewer likes but a meaningfully higher click-through rate to gated content, even though the first post would win on a simple engagement report. Once pipeline contribution is the standard, the content that keeps getting made is the content that actually moves someone toward a conversation, not just the content that is easiest to get a reaction to.

We report social alongside every other channel in a program, not in a separate social-specific report disconnected from the rest of the funnel, because a prospect's path to a sales conversation rarely runs through social alone. Crediting social appropriately as part of a multi-touch journey, rather than either ignoring its contribution entirely or over-crediting it for a conversion three other channels also touched, gives a more honest picture of what the channel is actually worth.

Measured this way, social media marketing earns its budget the same way every other channel does, on contribution to real pipeline, not on engagement numbers that look good in isolation, which is the same standard we hold every channel to across a program built to keep client pipelines fed toward 23,000+ leads a month, social included.
