MQL vs our four lead tiers: why marketing qualified is not specific enough

Marketing qualified lead is a label almost every B2B team uses, and almost none of them define the same way. Ask five companies what makes a lead an MQL and you will get five different answers, a lead score threshold, a content download, a form fill on any gated asset, which makes the term nearly useless as a specification, even though it gets treated as one in most reporting.

We use four explicitly defined tiers instead, Single Touch, Double Touch, HQL, and BANT, precisely because each one specifies exactly what qualification a lead carries: one piece of content engaged with, two pieces engaged with, one qualifying question answered, or up to four strategic questions answered. There is no ambiguity about what a client is receiving at any tier, because the definition does not depend on an internal lead-scoring model nobody outside the team can see.

This matters most at the handoff to sales. A rep told a lead is "MQL" has to guess how qualified that actually means, and different reps on the same team sometimes guess differently, treating the same tier of lead with wildly different urgency. A rep told a lead is BANT knows precisely what qualification already happened before the lead reached them, no guessing required.

The specificity also makes cost and performance genuinely comparable across campaigns. Two "MQLs" from two different lead scoring models are not the same product and should not be judged on the same benchmark, but two BANT leads, defined identically regardless of which campaign produced them, can be measured against each other honestly, because the underlying qualification bar never moved between them.

Naming the tier specifically, rather than defaulting to a broad label that means something different depending on who is using it, is a small change with a real effect on how a lead gets treated the moment it lands, and it is part of why our lead generation programs keep sales teams working leads at the urgency each one actually deserves, across programs generating 23,000+ leads a month.
