Territory and account fit: what decides which rep a new lead actually goes to

Routing a new lead to whichever rep is next in a round-robin queue is easy to set up and ignores almost everything that should actually decide the assignment: territory, prior account history, and whether that rep's actual strengths fit this particular lead's profile. Speed matters, but speed to the wrong rep still produces a slower path to a closed deal than a slightly slower handoff to the right one.

Territory has to be the first filter, not an afterthought applied after assignment. A lead assigned outside its correct territory either gets quietly reassigned later, losing the speed advantage a fast initial routing was supposed to provide, or gets worked by a rep without the regional or vertical context that would have made the first call sharper. We route on territory before anything else, so the rep who picks up already has relevant context for that account's market.

Account history matters just as much. A lead from a company that already has an open opportunity, a past customer relationship, or a prior failed deal with specific context attached should never route as if it were a brand-new account, because a rep working it cold, without that history, is repeating a conversation the company may have already had once and starting from a worse position than the one that already existed.

We also route by fit between rep strength and lead profile where the data supports it, a rep who consistently converts a particular vertical or company size getting more of that profile, rather than assignment being purely mechanical. This is a lighter-weight signal than territory or history, but over enough volume it measurably improves conversion, because leads land with the reps statistically best positioned to work them.

Getting routing logic right is a quieter lever than targeting or offer quality, but it directly determines whether a well-generated, well-qualified lead actually gets the attention and context it deserves once it lands, which is why we build routing rules into every lead generation program rather than leaving assignment to whichever queue happens to be shortest that day.
