The sales-marketing SLA that keeps an ABM program honest week to week

A handoff agreement made at kickoff is a good start and a poor substitute for an ongoing one. Sales and marketing agree on what "ready" means for a target account in the first meeting, everyone nods, and three months later the definition has quietly drifted because nobody revisited it. An SLA that only exists on a kickoff slide is not really an SLA, it is a memory.
We build a standing weekly check into every ABM engagement specifically to keep the agreement alive: which accounts moved tier this week, which ones marketing flagged as ready, which ones sales followed up on and what happened. Fifteen minutes, same time every week, is enough to catch drift before it becomes a real gap between what marketing thinks is happening and what sales is actually doing with the accounts they receive.
The SLA also has to specify response time, not just readiness criteria. An account marketing flags as sales-ready needs a defined window, we use same-day for one-to-one accounts, for a rep to make first contact, because a hot account sitting untouched for three days is functionally the same as a program with no SLA at all, regardless of how well the readiness criteria were defined on paper.
When an account gets rejected back to marketing, the SLA requires a reason, not a silent return to the target list. "Not ready" with no context teaches marketing nothing about what to fix. A rejection tied to a specific gap, wrong contact, no budget signal yet, lets the program actually improve the next handoff instead of repeating the same mismatch on the next account.
This standing structure is what keeps sales and marketing working from the same current picture of an account list rather than the picture that was accurate at kickoff, and it is a meaningful part of why engagements built this way sustain alignment, and a 94% success rate, across a full quarter instead of just the first few weeks.
