Account-level intent vs contact-level intent: why aggregating signal is what actually predicts a deal

One contact's individual research activity tells you less than three contacts at the same account independently researching similar topics within the same window, and a scoring model built purely at the contact level misses that distinction entirely, treating both scenarios as isolated individual signals rather than recognizing the second pattern as something closer to an actual internal buying process forming.

We aggregate intent signal to the account level specifically to catch this, rolling up research activity from every known contact at a company into a single account view rather than scoring each contact independently and never connecting the dots between them. A single contact researching a topic once might be idle curiosity. Three different roles at the same account researching adjacent topics within the same two weeks looks like something is actually happening internally, and only an account-level view surfaces that pattern.

This also changes how false positives get filtered. A contact-level model treats an isolated researcher the same whether or not anyone else at their company is doing anything related, and cannot distinguish a lone browsing session from a genuine early-stage evaluation. An account-level view catches the difference immediately: activity from just one person with no corroborating signal from colleagues gets weighted as weaker evidence than the same activity paired with related research from elsewhere in the same organization.

Weighting also has to account for role diversity within that account-level rollup, not just headcount of researchers. Three contacts in the same department researching the same narrow topic is a weaker signal than three contacts across different departments, roles more plausibly spanning an actual buying committee, researching related but distinct angles of the same underlying problem, since the second pattern looks more like a genuine cross-functional evaluation than a single team's isolated interest.

Scoring at the account level rather than the contact level is what lets intent data connect directly to how ABM and lead generation already think about accounts, since a target account was never really one person to begin with, and treating intent signal the same way, aggregated across the actual buying committee rather than scattered across individual contact records, is what turns a noisy stream of individual activity into a genuinely predictive account-level signal.
