Buying intent data providers: what to check before you sign a contract

Buying intent data providers get evaluated on the wrong question most of the time -- teams ask how many topics or accounts the platform covers, when the question that actually predicts value is how the signal was collected and how fast it is delivered.

We check three things before recommending any provider to a client: whether the intent signal comes from first-party co-op data or third-party bidstream data (the two behave very differently in accuracy), how frequently the data refreshes, and whether it can be matched against a verified account and contact database rather than just a domain. Intent data with no way to act on it inside 48 hours is close to worthless.

Topic coverage matters less than most vendors' sales decks suggest. A provider with narrower but highly relevant topic taxonomy for a specific vertical consistently outperforms a provider with thousands of generic topics, because the signal-to-noise ratio is what determines whether sales actually trusts and acts on the alert.

The contract terms deserve as much scrutiny as the data itself. We have seen clients locked into annual commitments with providers whose data coverage was thin outside North America -- worth checking explicitly if you sell into EMEA, APAC or LATAM, since intent data quality varies a lot more by region than most providers disclose upfront.

We overlay third-party intent data against our own 46M+ verified database records -- split roughly 25.5M+ in North America, 11.6M+ in EMEA, 6.9M+ in APAC and 2.3M+ in LATAM -- because intent signal is only as useful as the account and contact data you can actually act on it with.
