First-party signals vs third-party intent data: what each one actually tells you

Not all intent data comes from the same place, and treating it as one undifferentiated category is how teams end up misreading what a signal actually means. First-party and third-party intent tell you genuinely different things, and knowing which one you are looking at changes how much weight it deserves.

First-party intent comes from a prospect's direct behavior on your own properties: which pages they visited on your site, what content they downloaded, which emails they opened and clicked. This is the highest-confidence signal available, because there is no ambiguity about what happened, you watched it happen. The tradeoff is coverage: first-party signal only exists for prospects who have already interacted with you directly, which leaves out every account still researching the category anywhere else.

Third-party intent fills that gap by tracking research activity across a much broader network, topics an account is researching on industry publications and comparison sites well before that account ever visits your website. This is what lets a program identify a genuinely in-market account before they have shown you any direct interest at all, but it comes with lower certainty, since you are inferring intent from topic research rather than watching a direct interaction with your own content.

We weight the two differently rather than treating a signal from either source as equally actionable. A third-party signal on its own gets an account onto a watch list. A third-party signal that then converts into first-party behavior, that same account visiting your site or opening an email shortly after, is what actually triggers active outreach, because the combination confirms interest that a single source alone could only suggest.

Combining both sources against a continuously verified database of 46M+ records is what lets us catch an account early enough to matter, on third-party signal, and confirm it accurately enough to act on, with first-party behavior, instead of relying on either source alone and either missing accounts too early or reacting to them too late.
