How intent data decides which accounts make it onto an ABM target list

A firmographic filter tells you who could plausibly buy, the right industry, the right size, the right general profile. It does not tell you who is actually looking right now, and an ABM target list built on firmographics alone is a list of candidates, not a list of accounts worth immediate investment. Intent data is what turns a plausible candidate list into a prioritized one.

We layer intent signal onto a firmographically qualified account universe rather than starting from intent data alone, since intent activity from an account that does not fit the target profile at all is not a meaningful signal no matter how strong it looks, it is just noise from the wrong audience. The two filters have to apply together: fit narrows the universe to accounts worth considering, intent narrows that group further to the ones worth acting on now.

This combined view is what determines account tier, not just whether an account makes the list at all. An account with strong fit and strong, sustained intent is a candidate for one-to-one treatment, the dedicated research and custom content that level requires. An account with strong fit but no current intent signal stays on a broader one-to-many or nurture track until intent activity actually appears, rather than receiving premium personalization on the strength of fit alone.

Intent signal also changes over the life of a target list, not just at the moment the list is built. An account with no signal at list creation can develop it three months later, and a target list that only gets scored once at the start misses that account entirely until a periodic refresh happens to catch it. We treat intent scoring as continuous against the target account universe, not a one-time filter applied before the campaign launches.

Combining fit and intent this way is what keeps an ABM program's heaviest investment concentrated on accounts that are both a genuine match and actually in motion right now, rather than spreading personalized attention evenly across a list where only a fraction of the accounts were ever going to be ready, which is a meaningful part of why programs built this way convert engaged accounts at a 94% success rate.
